15/March/2016 – High Speed MVC – “A” Shift

Incident # 16-01572 – Two tractor trailers collided near the 48 mile marker on Interstate 95 Tuesday morning 15-March at 00:56. Both vehicles were traveling northbound when one truck ran into the back of the first vehicle. The collision caused heavy damage to both trucks as they went off of the right shoulder and stopped at the tree line. A large amount of oil and hydraulic fluid was spilled onto the roadway. The rear of one trailer, the oil and debris blocked both northbound lanes causing traffic to stop and back up for several miles. One truck caught fire after coming to rest against the other truck. An off-duty Ohio Firefighter used a portable fire extinguisher to douse the flames. Bystanders pulled the driver of one truck into the median and began rendering aid. Fire-Rescue units arrived a short time later. Firefighter-Paramedics treated both men for non-life threatening injuries and transported them to Colleton Medical Center. Crews removed debris from the roadway and were able to reopen one lane. Fire units remained on the scene for four and half hours. The SC Highway Patrol and State Transport Police are investigating the accident. Colleton County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with traffic.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 110 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O’Quinn served as Incident Commander.
