30-July-2016 – High Speed MVC – “C” Shift

Incident # 16-04874 – A 41 year old man was critically injured in a motorcycle accident early Saturday morning 30-July in approximately the 1600 block of Robertson Blvd. near the solid waste convenience site. At 06:38, some passing motorists saw the man lying near the wood line. When they stopped to investigate, they also found the Harley Davidson motorcycle in the high grass. The man was unconscious and suffered from multiple life threatening traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics  arrived minutes later and began treating the man. They began assisting his breathing, immobilized him, then rapidly transported him to nearby Colleton Medical Center, where the ED staff worked to stabilize the patient. Shortly thereafter he was flown by the LifeNet 4 medical helicopter to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.

Apparently the eastbound motorcycle crossed the lanes of traffic and struck the guard rail in a curve sometime in the early hours Saturday morning. The driver was ejected and was found approx. 250 feet from the point of impact. He was not wearing a helmet. The motorcycle’s engine was cold. The well-traveled road is dark in this area as no street lights are located on the stretch of highway.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Traffic between Jefferies Hwy and Lemacks Street was closed for two and half hours while Law Enforcement investigated the accident.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
