02/September/2016 – Fatal Auto vs Pedestrian MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 16-05779 – A 30 year old Ladson man was critically injured after he was struck by a passenger car in the 13500 block of Cottageville Hwy (US Hwy 17-A) Friday evening 02-September at 20:20. According to witnesses, the man was attempting to remove a fallen tree from the highway. Multiple trees were down around the county due to the winds and rain related to Hurricane Hermine. This incident occurred just east of Sullivan’s Ferry Road in rainy conditions on a dark rural stretch of highway. Witnesses stated the man was out of his vehicle moving the fallen tree when he was struck by a small west bound Mercedes. The Mercedes also struck the tree. The speed limit in this area is 55 mph. The man suffered multiple trauma injuries and was unconscious in the roadway. An off-duty EMT from another agency stopped to render aid until Fire-Rescue units arrived. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 9 immobilized the patient. He was quickly treated at the scene, then transported emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical in Summerville where he was taken for surgery. He passed away the following day from his injuries. Traffic on Cottageville Hwy was blocked for 45 minutes and down to one lane for two hours while the SC Highway Patrol investigated the crash. The driver and passenger in the Mercedes were transported by Medic 19 to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. SCDOT crews responded to remove the tree.

Engine 9, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Capt. Dewayne Jacques served as Incident Commander.
