30/April/2017 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “B” shift 

Incident # 17-02954 – One person died and three others were injured following a head-on crash on Augusta Hwy (SC Hwy 61) at the Colleton-Dorchester County line Sunday evening 30-April at 18:22. Dorchester County received the reports of the accident first and arrived before Colleton units. The accident was actually about 100 feet into Colleton County. The two passenger cars struck head-on just west of the Edisto River bridge trapping both drivers. A front seat passenger in one vehicle was deceased and an infant in the same vehicle received non-life threatening injuries. Dorchester County Fire-Rescue used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate both drivers. Due to the position of the vehicles and the highway being blocked by the wreckage, Dorchester EMS transported the patients to a Trauma Center. One patient was flown by medical helicopter from a landing zone in Givhans. The Colleton County Coroner’s Office transported the fatality. Colleton Fire-Rescue units remained on the scene to assist the Highway Patrol with lighting while they conducted their investigation. The Highway in the area of the accident was closed for seven hours.

Engine 19, Engine 34, Engine 36, Rescue 1, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 109 responded. Sheriff’s Deputies from both Colleton and Dorchester assisted with traffic control.
