04/January/2018 – MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 18-00117 – A truck driver received non-life threatening injuries after his truck skidded on ice and overturned near the 68 mile marker northbound at 09:11 Thursday morning 04-January. The northbound 18-wheeler slid completely backwards and overturned in the median, trapping the driver. A second semi-truck also skidded on the ice covered highway, jack-knifing and blocked all of the northbound lanes. Other vehicles in the area were also having problems maintaining traction, prompting the Highway Patrol to close a portion of the Interstate for several hours until DOT crews worked on the ice removal and apply sand and salt to the roadway. Traffic was detoured to Augusta Highway (SC Highway 61) to Jefferies Highway (US Hwy 15). Engine 26 arrived to find the truck on its side. Firefighter-Paramedics used a Glass-Master to remove the windshield and free the driver. He was extricated with spinal precautions and transported to Colleton Medical Center. Fire-Rescue units and Sheriff’s Deputies assisted Troopers with the detour for 3-1/2 hours until the roadway was reopened.

Engine 26, Rescue 1, Medic 26. Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 109, Car 112 and Car 116 responded. Captain John Schneider served as Incident Commander.
