21/February/2018 – Fatal MVC with Entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 18-01303 – A Cottageville woman was killed and two other people were injured in a two vehicle high speed MVC in the 14000 block of Cottageville Hwy (US Hwy 17-A) Wednesday evening 21-February at 19:24. The accident was located on a straight portion of the highway near McDanieltown Road which is east of the Town of Cottageville. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes after 9-1-1 was notified of the crash. They found the two lane highway completely blocked by the cars and debris. Witnesses advised a northbound Hyundai Elantra crossed the center line and struck a southbound Chrysler 300 head-on. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage. The occupants of the Chrysler were able to exit the vehicle and were being cared for by another motorist. The driver of the Elantra was unconscious and had no signs of life. She was trapped in the wreckage. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. Once his investigation was completed, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the patient. She was transported by the Coroner’s Office. Cottageville Highway was blocked for nearly four hours until SCHP finished their investigation and the cars were removed. The Sheriff’s Office and Cottageville Police Dept rerouted traffic until the accident was cleared.

Engine 9, Rescue 1, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Tony Keen served as Incident Commander.
