18/March/2018 – MVC with entrapment & Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 18-01916 – A 24 yr. old woman was injured in a single vehicle, high speed MVC in the 19000 block of Lowcountry Hwy (US Hwy 21) north of Bells Highway Sunday morning 18-March. The incident was reported at 08:02, when a passerby reported seeing a car in the ditch. Fire-Rescue units from the Station at Bells Crossroads arrived a few minutes later to the find the car with heavy damage and the woman trapped in the wreckage. The north bound Toyota left the roadway and struck a driveway culvert on the southbound side of the road. The impact caused heavy damage to the car and shifted the interior trapping the woman between the seats and dash. The asphalt on the driveway was also displaced. Firefighter-Paramedics requested a Rescue unit and a medical helicopter as they began treating the woman’s injuries. The C.A.R.E. Flight helicopter flew to Bells Elementary School and stood by until the patient was extricated. Crews used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the passenger side doors and the roof. This allowed access to the patient. IVs and medications were administered during the extrication. The front seats had to be removed to free the woman. She was immobilized, then transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 18 to Bells Elementary School. The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew without difficulty. C.A.R.E. Flight flew the patient to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 18, Engine 31, Rescue 18, Medic 7, Medic 18, Battalion 1, Car 112, Car 118 and C.A.R.E. Flight responded. Battalion Chief Chris Jones served as Incident Commander.
