11/December/2018 – MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 18-08574 – An adult male was injured in a two vehicle MVC on I-95 near the 52 mile marker southbound, Tuesday morning 11-December at 07:15. A southbound passenger car collided with a southbound pickup truck pulling a camper, then went down an embankment and overturned trapping the driver. The pickup truck lost control from the impact and spun backwards, causing the camper to overturn in the roadway, blocking one southbound lane. Car 118 arrived two minutes later to find the passenger vehicle with heavy damage, overturned in a water filled ditch. The doors were damaged and blocked by several small trees. There was no access to the driver. A second Fire-Rescue Ambulance was assigned to the incident and a medical helicopter was placed on standby. Firefighter-Paramedics used a chainsaw to removed several of the trees, then used Holmatro Rescue Tools to force open a rear door. The male patient was extricated without difficulty and transported in Fire-Rescue Medic 1 to Colleton Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries. The two occupants of the pickup truck did not wish to be transported for medical care and the medical helicopter was canceled. One southbound lane of I-95 remained closed for approx. 2 hours until the camper could be removed from the Interstate. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 107, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
