24/Dec/2020 - Fatal MVC with Entrapment - "C" Shift

Incident # 20-08853 - A 41 year old Walterboro woman tragically died in a single car high speed MVC in the 4200 block of Green Pond Hwy. (SC Hwy 303) at 22:05 Christmas Eve. The 2000 BMW she was driving, was traveling northbound when it left the roadway in the rain. The car slid sideways, began to flip over before striking a power pole roof first. The impact pushed the roof into the seats. The unrestrained driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was trapped in the wreckage. A neighbor was in her yard, witnessed the crash and called 9-1-1. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later, but the driver had no signs of life. The Coroner's Office was notified and responded to the scene. Once they completed their investigation, Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove a portion of the roof and the driver's door to free the victim. The Coroner's Office transported her. The impact damaged the power pole and lines, knocking power out to approximately 1800 Dominion Energy customers south of Walterboro, including the communities of Ritter, Green Pond and Bennetts Point. Dominion crews responded to the scene and quickly made repairs to the lines after the accident was cleared, restoring power within about three hours after the crash. Green Pond Hwy was closed in the area of the accident for four hours. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Battalion 1, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
