09/April/2021 - Mutual Aid Fatal MVC w Air Evac - "B" Shift

Incident # 21-02455 - At 11:55 Friday 09-April, Dorchester County requested mutual aid with an overturned motorhome with entrapment on I-95 at Exit 77 in St. George. Colleton County Medic 7 and Battalion 1 were assigned to the incident. Upon arrival in St. George, the IC advised one patient was deceased and the other was still trapped. He noted the Colleton Medic Unit was no longer needed. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 7 then participated in the extrication of the male patient in the RV. Battalion 1 assisted with the LZ when Meducare arrived and landed on the entrance ramp just north of the accident scene. The large motor home was hauling a trailer and was northbound on I-95 traveling Interstate speeds. The motorhome left the roadway at a high rate of speed, entered the exit ramp and failed to negotiate the curve. The motorhome plummeted down the embankment, struck a tree and overturned, collapsing the vehicle. Both occupants and a canine were trapped in the wreckage. A heavy duty wrecker from Elite Towing was requested and lifted the motorhome a few feet allowing responders to extricate both occupants. The adult female occupant and the canine were found to be deceased. The adult male occupant was treated at the scene by Dorchester County EMS, then flown to a Trauma Center by Medicare. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Colleton Medic 7, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Multiple Dorchester County Fire-Rescue and EMS units also responded. Dorchester County Deputy Chief Malcolm Burns served as Incident Commander.
