09/July/2021 - MVC with Entrapment - :C: Shift

Incident # 21-04826 - Two people were injured when their semi-truck overturned on I-95 near the 55 mile marker southbound, Friday 09-July at 14:53. The truck left the roadway, went down an embankment and overturned, trapping the two truckers and two small canines. The box style trailer was carrying frozen chicken. A portion of the load spilled into the Jones Swamp Creek and swamp which runs adjacent to the Interstate, after one side and the roof of the trailer failed. Firefighter-Paramedics used a ladder to reach the driver's door and Holmatro Pentheon Rescue tools to force open the door. The two men suffered non-life threatening injuries and were able to climb out of the cab and walk to the Ambulance. Firefighters entered the cab to retrieve both of the dogs. The animals were also evaluated at the scene and did not appear to be injured. The two men and dogs were transported to Colleton Medical Center. Crews secured a diesel fuel leak from one of the saddle tanks. Traffic on southbound I-95 was backed up for four miles and caused delays most of the day while recovery crews removed the truck and trailer. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 26, Rescue 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 107, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Chris Jones served as Incident Commander.
