28-July-2021 - Flooding - "C" Shift

Incident # - Multiple - The Lowcountry Region received 7 to 10 inches of rain over a three hour period the morning of Wednesday 28-July. The heavy rain caused flooding in many areas, which caused washouts, road and business closures and damage to buildings and roadways. The 9-1-1 Center and Emergency Services were inundated with calls from citizens. The rain made responding difficult with near zero visibility and flooding on roadways. Walmart and several downtown businesses were forced to close due to water inside the businesses. Trees were down and power was also out in some areas. A 40 feet section of Hendersonville Hwy. (US Hwy 17-A) washed out and many streets were impassable. A mother and her teenage son crashed into the washed out portion of Hendersonville Hwy, but was fortunately not injured. Law Enforcement closed streets through the downtown business District due to flooding. The rain stopped around 10:30 and the water in the flooded areas began to recede. SCDOT was out in force making repairs and establishing detours around damaged roadways. Several other areas developed problems over the next few days including the closure to Industrial Road at Ireland Creek due to a washout at the bridge. No injuries were reported during the incidents or the multiple MVCs that occured. Fire-Rescue's Emergency Management Division worked with it's ESF partners to assess damages over the following days.
