10/October/2021 - High Speed MVC with Fire - "B" Shift

Incident # 21-07318 - A two vehicle, high speed MVC sent one person to a Trauma Center and a second man to Colleton Medical Center. At 05:42, Sunday morning 10-October, Fire-Rescue was dispatched to Interstate 95 near the 61 mile marker northbound, for a two vehicle accident. A northbound Honda Civic traveling at a high rate of speed rear ended a northbound tractor trailer. The small car received heavy damage, lost control and entered the wooded median. It struck several trees, overturned and caught fire. The two adult male occupants were able to escape the burning vehicle. Fire-Rescue Units found the two men laying on the side of the grass median. One suffered critical injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics began treating both men at the scene, while other crew members deployed one handline to extinguish the 50% involved car fire. A medical helicopter and a second Fire-Rescue Ambulance were requested. One NB lane of I-95 was blocked for two hours. The tractor trailer received damage to the rear wheels on the flatbed trailer. It was able to stop in the breakdown lane north of the accident. The truck driver was not injured. The medical helicopter was not able to fly due to poor weather conditions around Charleston. Fire-Rescue Medic 1 transported the critically injured man directly to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, where he was taken to surgery. The other man was transported to CMC in Walterboro. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 26, Car 112, Car 114 and Car 118 responded. Chief McRoy served as Incident Commander.
