Incident # 22-01374 - Two horses died in a single vehicle collision on I-95 near the 51 mile marker NB Sunday afternoon 20-Feb at 16:04. A northbound flatbed Ford truck pulling a horse trailer went into the median, striking several trees. The horse trailer was impaled on a large tree causing heavy damage to the trailer and ejecting the two horses. The truck became separated from the trailer and was upright in the median. The three occupants of the truck were not injured. One of the horses was dead at the scene, while the second horse was severely injured. One of the occupants of the truck was a veterinarian and was the owner of the horse. She had medications available to euthanize the animal. Firefighter-Paramedics examined one patient who denied the need to go to the hospital. Northbound traffic was down to one lane for about 45 minutes. The driver reportedly fell asleep causing the vehicle to drift into the wooded median. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
