02/March/2022 - Woods & Structure Fires - "B" Shift

Incident # 22-01625 - An unattended woods fire spread to a storage building, vehicle and mobile home Wednesday afternoon 02-March. At 15:40 a caller to 9-1-1 reported that a woods fire had spread to an outbuilding in the 400 block of Bent Gate Ln in the Springtown Community. Engine 7 arrived to find approximately 5 acres of woods and brush on fire, as well as a fully involved passenger car, a fully involved 12x12 storage building and a singlewide mobile home that was approximately 30% involved. Several other homes in the area were threatened by the fast moving woods fire. Crews requested a second alarm and a tractor from the Forestry Commission. They deployed multiple handlines to protect exposures and had several Tenders protect homes until additional Engines arrived. The singlewide mobile home suffered extensive damage. Firefighters were able to protect the remaining structures and none received damage. The Forestry Commision cut fire lines around the woods fire and the Ranger issued citations to the person who started the fire.

A dozen buildings, including storage buildings, have been damaged or destroyed over the past two weeks from woods and/or debris fires in Colleton County. Grass and brush is dry this time of year, coupled with the March winds and low humidity have contributed to fast moving woods fires.

Engine 7, Engine 17, Engine 19, Engine 26, Engine 36, Tender 5, Tender 7, Tender 17, Tender 18, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 7, Medic 18, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 103 and the Forestry Commission responded, Captain Brian Rowe served as Incident Commander.
