Colleton County Fire-Rescue

7/21/2008

In conjunction with “A” Shift Battalion Chief Rich Ellis, the training division conducted a “mega-code” drill. The simulated patient was an elderly man with sudden onset respiratory distress. Upon arrival, FF/P Goins and Eng/EMT Hoff found the patient laying supine breathing 8 times per minute.  The scene was complicated by loud music and distracting family members trying to “help”. The crew did an excellent job of managing the scene and rapidly moving the patient to the truck. Further evaluation revealed that the patient was hypertensive with cardiac rhythm changes and acute pulmonary edema.

As part of the drill, the “patient” was transported to the Colleton Medical Center ER, whose staff was aware of the drill and participated just as if we were bringing them an actual patient.

Participating in the drill:

Battalion Chief Rich Ellis

Captain Tim Wojcik

Lieutenant Scott Feather

Engineer/Paramedic Johnny Hoskins

Engineer/EMT-Basic Linda Hoff

Firefighter/Paramedic David Goins
