Colleton County Fire-Rescue
8/1/2008
On 1 August 2008 at 13:29, Fire-Rescue units were
dispatched to a Haz Mat incident at 101 Hampton Street, the Colleton
County Courthouse. Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield arrived and
established command. He found a pump sprayer outside of a personal
vehicle inside a cardboard box. The sprayer was owned by an employee
that works in the area and stated that the package contained pesticide and
had vented a gas after sitting in the vehicle all afternoon. Law
enforcement personnel on scene reported an "irritating" odor
coming from the area of the vehicle. Personnel donned level B suits
and monitored the initial area without obtaining any readings outside of
normal limits. The package was then moved to a more secure
location. An attempt was made to obtain samples from the sprayer but
it was found to be completely empty. The vehicle was swept with air
monitoring equipment and finding no readings outside of normal limits, the
scene was released to the courthouse staff.
Battalion 1, Medic 27, Haz Mat 19, Truck 111, Truck 116, Truck 12, Walterboro Public Safety and the Colleton County Sheriff's Office responded.
In this picture, Battalion Chief Marty Stallings and another firefighter attempt to sample the product inside the pump sprayer using a portable infrared spectral analyzer. |
