Colleton County Fire-Rescue
8/9/2008
Fire-Rescue crews
assisted with preparations for the funeral of Sheriff's Deputy Dennis
Compton who was killed in the line of duty last Wednesday. Personnel
were at the site, near First Baptist Church at 0700. Crews set up
Ladders 6 and 19, positioning the units to extend over Memorial Street.
A large US Flag was hung between the platforms. Maneuverability was
tight with the multitude of power lines supplying the area businesses. A
truck load of traffic cones were used to secure several areas. A rehab
area was established in the church parking lot with a Medic Unit and
water table. A pickup truck load of bottled iced water was on hand
for the several hundred attendees due to the extreme hot weather
conditions. Firefighters passed out iced water to keep attendees, many
in long sleeve dress uniforms with jackets, hydrated. Law Enforcement Officers
stood outside for several hours. No one was treated for any medical
conditions.
Units were at the
site until 1230.
