Colleton County Fire-Rescue
8/9/2008
Funeral services
for Colleton County Deputy Sheriff Dennis Compton were held at the First
Baptist Church in Walterboro on Saturday at 1000. Several hundred Public
Safety personnel from agencies as far away as Prince George's
County Virginia were in attendance. The services were coordinated by SC
Highway Patrol Captain Jim Woods who did a splendid job on the beautiful
service.
Visitation was
held the previous evening at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home on Paul Street.
Saturday morning, the humbling service began with the hearse parked
on Memorial Street just north of the church. This was followed by the
Sheriff's Office units processing into the large church parking lot and
the personnel then filing out into rows behind the hearse. A motorcycle
procession made up of SC Highway Patrol Troopers and members
of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office Motor Squad escorted the
family to a position at the front steps of the sanctuary. Several
hundred officers and family then filed into the church for a 45 minute
service conducted by Sheriff's Office Chaplin Zane Brown. Following the
eulogies from several people, the officers and family filed out of
the church back onto Memorial Street where the service continued.

Officers saluted
the flag draped coffin as the honor guard expertly marched with the
casket. SC Highway Patrol's Honor Guard provided a 21 gun salute, while
the Isle of Palms Police Department provided a bag piper. The service
concluded with a bugler playing taps and a fly over by three
SLED helicopters. The casket was placed into the hearse, which was
escorted by the motorcade north on Memorial Street, under the large US
Flag hanging from the Ladders 6 and 19. The procession continued toward
the Funeral Home, with the roads lined with police vehicles, saluting
officers and firefighters honoring the fallen Deputy.
Dennis Compton
has left a legacy of being a caring and fine officer, who served this
community well. He was a committed Law Enforcement Officer and father
who will be remember fondly. He will be greatly missed.
