Colleton County Fire-Rescue

8/30/2008

On 30-August, at 2131 hours, within two hours of the previous extrication, Engine 26, Rescue 1 and Medic 27 were dispatched to a reported vehicle accident with entrapment on I-95 at the 68 mile marker northbound. Medic 27 rode up on the accident at the 60 mile marker. Engine 26, who had already gone north on the Interstate from Exit 62 checked up to Exit 68 and did not locate another accident. Engine 26 responded back to the correct location.

Medic 27 found a small SUV in the wood line. The vehicle was upright, but had rolled over several times at a high rate of speed. The Ford Explorer suffered heavy damage. Two occupants, who had not been wearing seat belts were ejected and found near the vehicle. One suffered critical injuries. Medic 27 requested two additional Medic units and a medical helicopter. The personnel were overwhelmed with eight injured patients until additional resources arrived to assist. A second medical helicopter was requested for the second ejected patient due to his severe injuries. No patients were trapped in the crash. Rescue 1 deployed it's light tower to illuminate the scene.

Meducare and Lifenet 3 responded to the scene. Northbound I-95 was shut down for about 25 minutes while the two helicopters used the highway as a landing zone. The remaining patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center for additional treatment. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 26, Rescue 1, Truck 12, Truck 16, Medic 9, Medic 18 and Medic 27 responded. Lt. Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
