Colleton County Fire-Rescue

9/15/2008

Stations 1, 9, 19, 26 and 27 responded to a fatal MVC on I-95 near the 50 mile marker NB at the Crosby Corner Road overpass. Apparently, a northbound full size Ford Extended-van left the roadway at a high rate of speed and overturned multiple times. The van went up the overpass embankment, then tumbled down into a wooded area about 75 feet from the roadway. The van was not visible from the highway. Three occupants, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the van. Two remaining occupants were trapped in the wreckage. One of the ejected patients received fatal injuries and was DOA at the scene. Two other patients received suspected critical injuries. The van was owned by Trinity AME Church on Round O Road.

Fire-Rescue responded with three ambulances and multiple pieces of other equipment to handle the challenging extrication. All equipment had to be carried into the woods to reach the vehicle. Once extricated, both patients had to be carried up the embankment and out to the highway. Two medical helicopters, Meducare and LIfenet 3, were called to the scene to fly the two critical patients to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The remaining two patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center. The Coroner's Office responded to the scene to
 transport the deceased patient.

Fire units and the Highway Patrol were on the scene for over two hours. Traffic on northbound I-95 was slowed to one lane for an extended period and time and stopped completely while the helicopters were on the ground. It was stopped again several times while Law Enforcement conducted their investigation.
