Colleton County Fire-Rescue

10/21/2008

Stations 4, 18, 19 and 26 responded to a dwelling fire in the Red Root Community near Ruffin at 09:49, Tuesday. The fire occurred at 26 Sampson Lane. Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the two-story home. Engine 18's crew made entry with one 1-3/4 hand line and had the fire in the kitchen area contained within about 8 minutes. A second line was extended to the second floor into the rooms over the kitchen, but the sheetrock ceiling below held the fire and only smoke was found on the second floor. The fire heavily damaged the kitchen and an attached dining area. The entire house suffered from smoke and heat damage, but most personal items and the remainder of the structure were spared. The fire was held in the rooms of origin because the doors to the kitchen were closed. The fire had just burned through two doors when firefighters arrived, so actual fire damage in the adjacent rooms was minimal. The homeowner was at home at the time of the fire so it was detected early and fire units arrived within 5 minutes. The exterior of this home suffered damage on the rear where the fire burned out of the kitchen windows. The fire originated at the stove. No one was injured.
Engine 4, Engine 18, Tanker 4, Tanker 18, Tanker 26, Ladder 19, Medic 18, Truck 11, Truck 12 and Truck 111 responded. Asst. Chief Greene served as Incident Commander.
