Colleton County Fire-Rescue

10/29/2008

The Tactical Response Team conducted high angle rescue training at the SCE&G Power Plant in Canadys on October 27th and 29th, 2008.  The drill consisted of a plant worker who had fallen from the top of a fly ash silo.  A mannequin was used to simulate the plant worker/patient and had fallen from a height of 130 feet to a height of 80 feet before his simulated fall arrest equipment stopped his descent.  Participants were tasked with ascending the silo and rigging a lowering system to allow rescuers to access the simulated patient.  At a height of 80 feet, the patient was picked off, evaluated and stabilized.  The patient was then lowered to a platform approximately 25 feet above ground level where he was then packaged in a stokes basket and then lowered to a stretcher on the ground.  The drill was conducted by Battalion Chief Rich Ellis, Lieutenant Scott Feather, and Engineer/Paramedic Brian Rowe.  Additionally, Tactical Response Team members also learned how to use the newly acquired Area Rae wireless multi-gas detector system.
