Colleton County Fire-Rescue

1/14/2009

Stations 1, 18, 19 and 23  responded to a fatal two vehicle MVC on Broxton Bridge Hwy. (US Hwy. 601) just south of Confederate Hwy. (SC Hwy. 641) at 5:05 PM Wednesday 14-January. According to a witness statement, a Nissan Rodeo SUV was south bound on Broxton Bridge Hwy. and swerved to avoid a collision with a vehicle that entered the intersection from the stop sign. The Nissan left the right hand shoulder, over corrected and entered the north bound lane where it collided head-on with a north bound tractor trailer.  Both vehicles came to rest in the ditch.

The Nissan received massive damage, rolled over at least once and came to rest on its roof. The tractor trailer was on top of the Nissan pinning the driver in the wreckage. The 43 year old Gayton Georgia man died of his injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The truck driver received minor injuries and denied ambulance transportation to the hospital.

Firefighters used cribbing to stabilize both vehicles and used hydraulic rescue tools in an attempt to free the driver. Ultimately a heavy duty wrecker was used to lift the tractor trailer truck off of the Nissan. Hydraulic rescue tools were then

used to extricate the driver. The Coroner’s Office transported the body to the morgue. SCHP is investigating the accident. The MAIT Team also responded. Traffic on Broxton Bridge Hwy. was rerouted for three hours.

Engine 23, Rescue 1, Medic 18, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Captain Doug Mixson and Asst. Chief David Greene served as Incident Commanders. Medic  19 and the Meducare helicopter were cancelled enroute.
