Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/8/2009

Stations 1, 6, 9, 19 and 27 responded to a high speed, two car head-on MVC on Cottageville Hwy. (US Hwy. 17-A) near Sullivan’s Landing Road Sunday, 8-February at 1609. Both vehicles received heavy damage in the collision. The female driver of the Grand Marquis was trapped in her overturned vehicle. The second vehicle, a Ford Taurus, caught fire following the impact. Both occupants in the Ford Taurus were pulled to safety by bystanders. A 68 year old male passenger in the Taurus suffered multiple critical trauma injuries. Cottageville Hwy was completely blocked due to the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics from Station 9 in Cottageville arrived in six minutes and began treating the injured. Engine 9 quickly extinguished the fire, but it destroyed most of the already damaged vehicle. Additional Fire-Rescue ambulances were requested as well as three medical helicopters.

Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the roof on the over-turned vehicle to safely extricate the woman, while other firefighter-paramedics worked on the two other critical patients. A landing zone was established at the Cottageville Elementary School on Peirce Road approximately three miles from

the accident scene. Two Lifenet helicopters and the Gold Cross helicopter from Augusta, Georgia responded. The man was flown first, but went into cardiac arrest during the flight to MUSC. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The other two patients were also flown to MUSC in Charleston for treatment of multiple trauma injuries. Firefighters were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours until the accident was cleared. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the cause.

Engine 9, Medic 6, Medic 9, Medic 27, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Truck 12 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
