Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/10/2009

Stations 1, 6, 8, 13, 25, 27 responded to a large rapidly moving brush and woods fire in the 1100 block of Black Creek Road in the Hendersonville Community at 1420, Tuesday 10-February. Initial reports to 9-1-1 indicated a woods fire near 1149 Black Creek Road. Engine 8 and Engine 13 arrived to find a rapidly moving field fire that had already entered a wooded area. Driven by high winds, the fire quickly endangered multiple homes in the area. Firefighters radioed for additional help, requesting a structural assignment for the call. A tractor from the Forestry Commission was also requested, but had an extended arrival time due to Forestry units being tied up on other incidents. Smoke from the fire could be seen 8 miles away as additional firefighters responded to aid the crews already working to protect the nearby residents.

Multiple apparatus were positioned to combat the advancing flames and protect the structures in the path of the fire. One doublewide mobile home suffered extensive exterior damage as the fire surrounded the home and began to burn under the building. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire beneath the home, limiting the structural damage, however the siding and eves on three sides were

burned away. Crews prevented the fires, which were burning in three directions, from reaching five other structures. One dog pen was destroyed. Approximately 6 acres of brush and woods were burned before the Forestry tractor completed the fire lines around the fire. The fire is believed to have originated from an unattended trash fire.

Sheriff’s Deputies closed off Black Creek Road to all traffic between Bachelor Hill Road and Geralds Lane due to heavy smoke, which created zero visibility. Fire units were on the scene for 3 hours and returned two hours later when the fire jumped a fire line.

Engine 1, Engine 8, Engine 13, Engine 25, Tender 1, Tender 6, Tender 8, Tender 27, Battalion 1 and Medic 6 responded. Battalion Chief Marty Stallings served as Incident Commander.
