Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/18/2009

Stations 1, 19 and 26 responded to a three vehicle high speed MVC on I-95 at the 61 mile marker southbound at 2222 hours, Wednesday 18-February. Apparently a southbound tractor trailer struck the rear of a older model Ford Ranger Pickup truck that was being towed by a southbound dump truck. The collision caused heavy damage to the small pickup truck as the impact forced the dump truck off of the right side of the highway. The towed vehicle broke away from the dump truck, coming to rest in the ditch, while the dump truck entered the woods, struck several trees and over-turned. The tractor trailer went off on the left hand shoulder with the trailer sticking out in traffic.

Despite being severely injured, the dump truck driver was able to get out of his vehicle on his own. He was treated at the scene by Firefighter-Paramedics and flown by the Meducare Medical Helicopter to MUSC in Charleston. Meducare landed on the Interstate at the accident site. Traffic was slowed to one lane for about 1-1/2 hours as cars had to maneuver around the disabled tractor trailer and emergency vehicles. It was briefly stopped while the helicopter was on the ground.

Personnel from Auto Pit Stop Wrecker Service recovered the man’s dog in the wreckage when they were attempting to winch the overturned truck from the

woods. The dog survived the accident and did not appear to be injured. Colleton County Animal Control Officers responded to the scene and retrieved the animal until such time the driver is released from the hospital. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Engine 26, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, and Truck 12 responded.  Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
