Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/21/2009

At 0717, Saturday 21-February, Stations 1 , 26 and 27 responded to a high speed, single car MVC on Evergreen Lane. Initial callers reported the vehicle had struck a tree, was on fire and had children trapped inside. Fire-Rescue units were on the scene within five minutes to find a heavily damaged car against a tree. The car was fully involved. Bystanders had pulled a 22 year old male from the burning vehicle and reported they did not see anyone else in the car. The patient appeared to be severely injured and was covered with blood. Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down and searched the remains of the burned car, but did not locate any other patients. A search of the surrounding wooded area had negative results. The driver was very confused and could not provide reliable answers to questions, but no one else was located at the accident site.

The man was treated at the scene by Medic 27 and transported to the large field in front of Wal-Mart on Bells Hwy. The Meducare helicopter responded to the site and flew the man to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Engine 26, Rescue 1, Medic 27 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
