Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/22/2009

Stations 1, 4, 18, 26 and 27 responded to an overturned vehicle with entrapment, Sunday afternoon at 1530. The single vehicle accident occurred on Bells Hwy. near Mazio Circle when a full size van left the roadway, overcorrected and rolled over several times. Initial calls to 9-1-1 reported multiple patients with several people trapped. A Sheriff’s Deputy arrived within minutes, but as he approached the scene, two Hispanic males ran off into the woods. Evidence at the scene indicated at least one of them was injured.

The front seat passenger was trapped in the van. The majority of the damage occurred on the front passenger’s side. The Hispanic male suffered multiple traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics were able to enter the damaged vehicle and begin medical treatment on the man, while other crew members used hydraulic rescue tools to force open the side door and cut away the braces to remove a rear seat. He was removed with full spinal precautions and transported to a field behind Tabor Church about a mile from the scene. The Meducare helicopter responded to the field and flew the man to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the

accident. Alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor.

Engine 4, Engine 26, Rescue 1, Medic 18, Medic 27 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander, while Firefighter Jeff Laney handled the Landing Zone.
