Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/24/2009

At 1730, Tuesday evening 24-March, Station # 6 was dispatched to a woods fire in the 500 block of Hickory Hill Road. Shortly after the dispatch, the call was upgraded to a structure response, reporting a house at 594 Hickory Hill Road was also on fire. Stations 2, 12, 22 and 25 were also sent to assist. Engine 6 arrived to report a large slow moving woods fire with one structure fully involved and a second home endangered. Crews deployed two 1-3/4 handlines to combat the building fire and a booster line to begin working on the woods fire. A tractor from the Forestry Commission was also requested. Both buildings were constructed of block and vacant, however they contained heavy fire loads of furniture and household items. While working the fully involved smaller structure, firefighters noticed light smoke coming from the eves of the larger home. Fire had consumed vegetation growing on the rear corner of the building. This ignited a window sill and the roof, which in turned spread to a bed and other furniture in the rear bedroom. Firefighters forced entry into the home and made a quick knockdown with one 1-3/4 handline. The fire was contained to the rear bedroom, which suffered moderate damage. One Forestry tractor cut a line around the entire woods fire which was approximately 3-1/2 acres.

The smaller structure was a complete loss, however the larger building was saved with damage isolated to the rear bedroom. The Forestry Commission is investigating the cause of the woods fire.

Engine 6, Engine 25, Tender 2, Tender 6, Tender 12, Tender 25, Medic 6, Battalion 1 responded. Firefighter Anthony Keen served as Incident Commander.
