Colleton County Fire-Rescue

4/14/2009

Stations 1, 12, 19, 26 and 27 responded to a house fire at 77 Red Dog Lane on Tuesday afternoon 14-April at 1604. Engine 1, Tender 27 and Medic 27 arrived to find heavy smoke conditions and fire burning through the roof. Firefighters used two 1-3/4 handlines and entered the building through the rear door. Bystanders advised of a cat was possibly still in the residence. The bystanders had already broken a window on the double wide mobile home and rescued one feline. Interior crews were able to quickly gain control of the fire, which had already burned the roof off over the kitchen area. While inside, another firefighter heard a cat whining and located the animal in a bedroom. He was able to safely remove the animal and handed it over to Firefighter-Paramedics outside, who administered oxygen to the cat for several minutes. The animal appeared to be fine after a few minutes of treatment. Three civilians were also treated at the scene for minor difficulties, but refused transport to the hospital.

Firefighters worked for about 30 minutes extinguishing small fires in the void space above the living area and removing portions of the roof. Fire investigators

determined the fire originated on the stove and spread to a wall and into the ceiling. No one was at home at the time of the fire. Most personal belonging were saved and smoke damage was remarkably light. The kitchen and  dining room suffered heavy damage and the roof over the kitchen was completely burned away. Units were on the scene for two hours.

Engine 1, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 12, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 27 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
