Colleton County Fire-Rescue
5/18/2009
Stations 1, 2 and 6 responded
to a tractor trailer MVC in the 14000 block of ACE Basin Parkway (US
Hwy. 17) south of Jacksonboro, Monday morning 18-May at 0738. The
northbound truck left the roadway in heavy rains, lost control on the
soft shoulder and overturned. The truck slid into the trees causing
massive damage to the cab. The cab impacted a large tree, was ripped
from the chassis and bent in half. The driver was severely injured and
trapped in the wreckage. Fire-Rescue personnel used chainsaws to cut a
path into the heavily wooded area to reach the cab. The driver was
barely accessible, but Firefighter-Paramedics began treatment on the
patient while he was still in the cab. Personnel used a variety of tools
to extricate the man. No medical helicopters could fly due to poor
weather. He was transported directly from the scene by ambulance to the
Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Engine 2, Engine 6, Rescue 1,
Truck 116 and Truck 12 responded. Battalion Chief Marty Stallings served
as Incident Commander.
