Stations 1 and 27 responded to a high speed single car MVC on Green Pond Highway at Emerald Drive, Monday afternoon at 1836. The southbound Toyota Scion lost control in a curve and entered the northbound ditch. The vehicle became airborne, struck a power pole breaking it in half, flipped over at least once and landed up right in the middle of Green Pond Highway blocking the road. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was found approximately 40 feet north of the accident in the ditch. The patient received critical injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the 19 year old man at the scene and called for a medical helicopter. Meducare responded and landed at the helipad at Colleton Medical Center about 20 minutes later. The patient was in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital. He stopped breathing and appeared to have suffered a severe head injury. Firefighter-Paramedics intubated the patient before loading him in the helicopter. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
