Colleton County Fire-Rescue

6/12/2009

Stations 1 and 27 responded to a fatal single car MVC on I95 at the 50 mile marker northbound, Friday morning 12-June at 0802.  A small Chevrolet Cobalt left the straight piece of road at a high rate of speed and struck several pine trees.  The roof was crushed to the floor.  A truck driver who witnessed the accident stated it appeared the 19 year old female driver had fallen asleep.  She was not wearing a seat belt. Firefighters used two hydraulic cutters to remove the vehicle's roof and gain access to the patient.  She had no signs of life, which was verified with an ECG.  The Coroner's Office was notified and responded to the scene.  Following their investigation, firefighters continued with the extrication, inserting a large ram with an extension to force the passenger side doors and "B" post off of the patient.  She was then extricated and turned over to the Coroner's Office.  The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 27, Truck 111, and Battalion 1 responded.  Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
