Colleton County Fire-Rescue

7/1/2009

Stations 3, 7, 18 and 23 responded to a structure fire at 28198 Lowcountry Hwy in the Town of Smoaks at 1316, Wednesday 1-July. Engine 7 reported heavy smoke conditions on arrival with fire visible between the mobile home and an addition on the rear of the building. Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines and attempted entry through the front door, but were blocked by piled debris. They then made entry through a rear door. The interior was heavily involved, as the mobile home was used for storage. Debris, including furniture, tires, building materials and home fixtures were piled in all areas creating a large fire load. Fire also extended into the void space between the mobile home and the rear addition. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and spent another 30 minutes performing overhaul. This was the second suspicious fire in the Town of Smoaks with 36 hours. A church burned less than two blocks south of this unoccupied structure at 0325 yesterday morning. County Fire Investigators contacted SLED’s Arson Unit and the Sheriff’s Office. The building suffered heavy interior damage.

Engine 7, Engine 18, Tender 3, Tender 7, Tender 18, Medic 18, Battalion 1

and Truck 110 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
