Colleton County Fire-Rescue

Stations 7 and 18 responded to an ATV (Gator like vehicle) accident in the 900 block of Clatty Farm Road Wednesday 1-July at 1858. Witness accounts are sketchy, but apparently the ATV, which was being operated by two children, made contact with a southbound vehicle on Clatty Farm Road.  Following the collision, the ATV overturned ejecting the two boys and apparently rolled over on a 13 year old, causing critical trauma injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics found the boy sitting at a picnic table experiencing difficulty breathing. He was moved to the ambulance and a medical helicopter was requested. LifeNet 3 flew directly to the scene, landing in a large field near the accident site. The boy suffered severe chest, neck and head injuries. A chest decompression was performed at the scene and the flight crew performed RSI so they could intubate the child. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. As of late Wednesday night, he remained in critical condition at MUSC. The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. The second child was transported by family members POV. He did not appear to have life threatening injuries.

This is the second ATV vs car accident resulting in critical injuries to a minor

child in the last four days. A 14 year old boy operating a small ATV in Cottageville, struck a car on Griffith Acres Drive on Sunday and was also flown with critical injuries to MUSC. Neither patient was wearing a helmet.

Engine 7, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Truck 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Jonathan Pinckney served as Incident Commander.
