Colleton County Fire-Rescue

7/16/2009

Stations 1, 26 and 27 responded to a fatal high speed MVC on I-95 at the 62 mile marker northbound at 0515 on Thursday morning 16-July. The single car appears to have dropped off of the left shoulder, came back on the pavement and then left the roadway again, before striking several trees in the median. The passenger side door took the brunt of the impact causing massive damage to the 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 which had approximately three feet of intrusion into the passenger compartment. The 38 year old Florida woman was wearing a seatbelt, but received critical head injuries during the side impact collision. She was barely breathing when Engine 26 and Medic 27 arrived at the scene. Crews used hydraulic rescue tools to force open the driver’s door to gain access to the woman. A medical helicopter was contacted to fly to the scene to transport her to the Trauma Center at MUSC. She stopped breathing shortly after being removed from the vehicle and went into cardiac arrest a few minutes later. Omniflight was canceled and the woman was ground transported to Colleton Medical Center. Resuscitative efforts had been started shortly after she was extricated from the car and they were continued enroute to the hospital in Walterboro. The hospital staff continued resuscitative efforts after Medic 27 arrived at the Emergency Department, however she did not respond to treatment and was pronounced deceased about 20-25 minutes later.

Engine 26, Medic 27, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
