Stations 1, 9, 11 and 19
responded to a high speed MVC in front of 5253 Red Oak Road Friday
evening 17-July at 1917. Engine 11 arrived to report a minivan had
struck a power pole and overturned several times. Power lines were down
in the roadway, blocking Red Oak Road. The female driver was trapped in
the wreckage, which tore the front of the minivan off of the vehicle. It
came to rest in the front yard with engine being impaled on the power
pole. An adult male was out of the vehicle and suffered a head injury.
An additional Medic Unit and two medical helicopters were requested.
Only Omniflight-Charleston could fly and responded directly to the
scene, landing in a small field adjacent to the accident site. Firefighters began the
extrication with the Holmatro Combi-tool from Engine 9 until Rescue 1
arrived. Spreaders and Cutters were used to remove the driver’s door
and the rear sliding door. The “B” post was then completely removed
to allow for the patient to be safely removed. The Omniflight crew
assisted with patient care during the extrication. The male patient was
transported directly from the scene to the Trauma Center at MUSC by
Medic 9. The female patient, |
