Colleton County Fire-Rescue
7/18/2009
Stations 6 and 19 responded to a hazardous materials
incident on Ashepoo Drive at Ace Basin Parkway at 0846 on Wednesday, July
22. Engine 6 and Medic 6 arrived five minutes later to find an
unknown drum covered in black plastic on the side of Ashepoo Drive.
The area was immediately isolated and an entry team was sent in to attempt
to identify and confine the product. Portable air monitors were used
but could not identify the product. The product was contained in an
overpack container. The Department of Health and Environmental
Control responded to the scene and requested a clean up contractor.
Several mobile detection devices were also used in an attempt to identify
the material but results were inconclusive.
Fire-Rescue units remained on scene for nearly five hours. The clean up contractor will send the product to a laboratory for further testing. Although the incident occurred in close proximity to the CSX railway, there were no interruptions to their service. Despite the 92 degree heat and 70% relative humidity, there were also no injuries. Engine 6, Medic 6, Haz Mat 19, and Battalion 1 responded. |
