Colleton County Fire-Rescue
7/28/2009
Stations 1, 2, 5, 6, 11, 17,
19, 26, and 27 responded to a three alarm fire at 1497 Industrial Road,
New York Wire Facility at 0331, Tuesday 28-July. On arrival, Engine 19
reported heavy smoke visible from the rear of the 350,000 square foot
industrial complex. Engine 19 took a position at the rear of the
building laying a 5 inch supply line. Ladder 19 also set up in the rear
of the facility. Engine 26 was directed to the sprinkler connection at
the front of the building. Firefighters encountered several employees
who had attempted to the fight the fire with portable extinguishers. Two
were complaining of respiratory complaints. An evacuation of workers was
already in progress. A second Medic unit was requested and a second
alarm was dispatched at 0349. Interior crews found heavy fire conditions
in a large piece of machinery located inside the facility. The unit was
the size of a small mobile home and is used in the manufacturing process
at the plant. Fire had spread across the ceiling, extending into the
duct work above the unit as well as venting from exhaust vents on the
roof. Crews deployed a three inch line into a rear door, gating the line
to two 1-3/4 lines once inside the facility. Engine 5 set up operations
at the C/D corner and deployed one 1-3/4 handline into a side door. All
three lines were used to |
|
control the fire inside the building. Smoke conditions were intense, with near zero visibility inside the structure. Ladder 19 deployed a fourth 1-3/4 handline from the bucket which was used on the roof to direct water into the roof vents. A third alarm was dispatched for
manpower at 0410. Maintenance employees arrived a short time later to
activate the fire suppression system in the duct work. This quickly doused
the flames in the ducts. Interior crews had the fire extinguished after
about one and half hours and were on the scene for three hours. One
firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene and both injured
workers denied need for transport to the hospital. The machine where the
fire originated suffered heavy damage, as well as the ceiling/roof structure
above the unit. Engine 1, Engine 5, Engine 11, Engine 17, Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 5, Ladder 6, Ladder 19, Medic 6, Medic 19, Medic 27, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Truck 11, Truck 12, Truck 111, Truck 116 responded. Asst. Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander. |
