Colleton Firefighters had a busy morning 31-August as a severe thunderstorm rolled through the county around 0530. Several auto accidents, medical calls and two lighting strikes sent units scrambling from Canadys to Green Pond. In the more serious incidents, a lightning strike was reported at a residence on the corner of Round O Road and Fleming Road. Engine 5, Engine 19 and Medic 19 handled the situation quickly and no serious damage was reported to the structure. A second lightning strike occurred in a two story work shop behind a residence at 6884 Featherbed Road at 0628. Engine 19 responded from Fleming Road and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the two story 20 by 30 foot building. The second story was used for storage and about half the contents were on fire. The fire was quickly knocked down with one 1-3/4 handline, but the roof and interior was damaged. Firefighters remained on the scene for about an hour performing overhaul. The lower story received only minor smoke damage. Engine 1, Engine 19, Tender 9, Tender 12, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 9, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. A serious two car accident on Cottageville Hwy. near Round O Road sent several people to the hospital. Medics 9 and 19 responded as well as Engine 9. An accident on I-95

near Exit 57 also keep units tied up for about 30 minutes. Medic 27 and Engine 26 responded, while Engine 2 and Medic 6 handled a medical problem on ACE Basin Parkway near Charleston Hwy. Several other minor calls were also handled during the storm.
