Wood of Station # 6 was presented with the Order of the Palmetto during
the County Council Meeting, Tuesday 1-September. The Order of the Palmetto
is one of the highest civilian honors awarded by the Governor of South
Carolina. It originated with Gov. John West who created the honor to
recognize lifetime achievement and service. The award was presented by
local businessman Billy Padgett. Governor Sanford sent a letter
apologizing for not attending due to a conflict. The Council Chambers were
packed, with standing room only. Many community leaders, past and present
Judges also attended. The 63 year old Wood was recognized for his service
to the State of South Carolina, Colleton County and the Community of Green
Pond. Among those achievements, he has served the Green Pond Baptist
Church; was instrumental, along with others, in bringing fire protection
to the Green Pond Community in 1972 and served in many positions over the
years including Fire Chief; He has continually served on the Fire
Department and now in the Fire-Rescue Department for 38 years; He has
served as a Magistrate for 34 years, many of those as Chief Magistrate
earning him the reputation as a fair and honest man. Mr. Wood operates a |

successful construction company with his son and is a wonderful man who has helped many in his lifetime. | |
