Colleton County Fire-Rescue

9/12/2009

Stations 5, 9, 11 and 19 responded to a structure and woods fire in the 100 block of Prairie Lane at 1030 Saturday morning 12-September. A Sheriff’s Deputy noticed smoke in the area and upon investigating he located an approximately two acre woods fire at the corner of Augusta Hwy and Prairie Lane. As he drove down Prairie Lane, he found a singlewide mobile home that had already burned completely down and was no longer smoking. Fire-Rescue was notified and responded to the location. The structure was actually two singlewide mobile homes placed together in an “L” configuration. The fire had also spread to an adjacent house, but the home was constructed of brick, so the fire did not extend to the structure. There was no power connected to either building.  The Forestry Commission responded a tractor to the scene and cut a fire break around the woods fire. Firefighters used fire rakes and flaps to work the head of the fire until the tractor arrived.

It was later determined that a neighbor saw the buildings on fire at around 0700 but did not notify anyone. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Engine 5, Engine 19, Tender 5, Tender 11, Tender 19, Tender 9, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
