Colleton County Fire-Rescue

12/15/2009

December In-Service Training was conducted by the SLED Bomb Team and was lead by Special Agent Ed Pumphrey. The three hour training class consisted of review of blast injuries and information being gathered from such injuries by the military related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pumphrey covered the dynamics of explosives and many types used by criminals/terrorist and their methods of operations. He instructed personnel on what to look for at blast sites and precautious that could taken by emergency responders. He displayed equipment used by SLED’s Bomb Team and gave the students the opportunity to wear the 100 plus pound protection suit. Most importantly, students were able to extricate a victim from the bomb suit, since ordinary trauma shears cannot penetrate the materials. The suit is equipped with rapid escape areas, you just have to know where to find them. The class was very informative. Pumphrey and one of his crewmembers attended all four In-Service Training sessions for December.
