12/31/2009

Stations 1, 12, 19, 24 and 27 responded to a house fire at 267 Brittlebank Road Thursday afternoon, 31-December at 1508. On arrival Engine 19 found a doublewide mobile home with flames visible from two bedrooms on the “D” side of the trailer. Two crews entered the building, one attacked the fire with an 1-3/4 handline while the second searched for occupants. The first crew had the bulk of the fire knocked down in less 10 minutes. The firefighters searching the structure rescued two small dogs on the “A” side of the mobile home. One dog was not breathing and the second was making attempts to gasp for air. Firefighters attempted to revive both animals without success. Exterior personnel used resuscitative equipment specifically designed for canines which was donated to the department by retired businessman Tommy Godwin two years ago. The equipment is carried on each Fire-Rescue ambulance. This is first time firefighters have had the necessity to use the equipment.

Two 1-3/4 handlines were used to stop the spread of the fire which was contained to the two bedrooms. The front bedroom was completely gutted. The remainder of the home was saved including most of the family’s possessions,

however the home suffered smoke and heat damage. They did not have any insurance. Tenders were used for water supply, however only 2500 gallons of water was used. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross was notified and has been in touch with the family. Fire units were on the scene for 3 hours. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Agents from SLED are assisting with the cause determination.
