Colleton County Fire-Rescue

Stations 4, 7, 17 and 18 responded to a structure fire across from 2232 Sunrise Road east of the Town of Smoaks, Wednesday afternoon 13-January at 1613. Engine 7 originally responded to a woods fire at the location after a person stopped by the station to report the fire. Once on the scene, firefighters discovered the building burning. Most of the structure had already collapsed. The building had once been a country store and was not visible from the road. It had been abandoned for several decades, with only an antique style glass topped fuel pump remaining to tell it’s age. A structural assignment was dispatched to assist Engine 7, but the building was completely destroyed. A woods fire also burned approximately ½ acre surrounding the building. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire to try and determine if the building was intentionally set or burned due to the result of a woods fire. Units were on the scene for one hour.

Engine 7, Engine 17, Tender 7, Tender 17, Tender 18, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Truck 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Robert Sherry served as Incident Commander.
