2/28/2010
Stations 1 and 19 responded to a fatal high speed MVC in the 5200 block of Jefferies Highway, Sunday afternoon 28-February at 1321. Witness stated a northbound full size van left the roadway, over-corrected and entered the ditch on the southbound side of the road. The van struck two pine trees which peeled off the roof before it over-turned. The 27 year old female driver was ejected from the vehicle and died of multiple trauma injuries. Several child safety seats and children’s toys were found at the accident site. Firefighters searched the over-turned vehicle and the nearby woods until a family member arrived on the scene, advising the children were not in the vehicle and were safe at home. Jefferies Highway was closed for approximately 40 minutes while the Highway Patrol and Coroner’s Office investigated the accident. Engine 19, Rescue 1, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
