Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/19/2010

Stations 1, 5, 9, 11, 19 and 26 responded to a structure fire at 1948 Burlington Road at 2222, Friday evening 19-March. Engine 19 and Medic 19 arrived to find a doublewide mobile home with flames visible through the roof and in the interior of the building. Engine 19 used a deck gun to knock down the flames to permit interior crews to enter the building. Two 1-3/4 handlines were deployed for two interior attacks on the building. Firefighters were met with heavy fire conditions throughout the large mobile home, but had the fire contained within 30 minutes. A second alarm was assigned to the incident at 2241 for manpower and additional Tenders. The homeowner noted he had a kerosene lamp burning in the bedroom, which was knocked over at some point. The smoke woke the man to a fire in the bedroom. He initially attempted to combat the fire himself with buckets of water, but the flames grew too quickly, forcing him to retreat from the building. The rear wall and roof in the room of origin had already burned away when firefighters arrived 8 minutes after the 9-1-1 call was received. Units were on the scene for 4-1/2 hours. A puppy also perished in the fire, bringing the total to six dogs and two cats that died in structure fires this week throughout the county. No one else was injured in the incident. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Engine 5, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 5, Tender 9, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 19 and  Battalion 1 responded. Firefighter-EMT Marshall Murdaugh served as Incident Commander.
