Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/29/2010

Stations 1, 9, 19 and 27 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on Cottageville Highway west of Round O Road at 2005, Monday evening 29-March. Engine 19 arrived to report a small SUV with heavy damage, on its side in a creek. The only occupant received multiple traumatic injuries and was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics removed a portion of the windshield to gain access to the patient, while another crew used Holmatro Rescue Tools to cut away the rear hatch on the small SUV. The patient was immobilized in the car and given pain medications before he was extricated. The patient was removed with full spinal precautions, then placed in Medic 27 for further treatment. A medical helicopter was requested, with a landing zone established on Round O Road north of Cottageville Highway. Omniflight Charleston responded and flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Cottageville Highway was closed between Round O Road and Merrick Drive for about an hour.

Engine 9, Engine 19, Rescue 1, Medic 27 and Battalion 1 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Paul Harrelson served as Incident Commander.
