Colleton County Fire-Rescue
5/7/2010
On May 3rd throught 5th, 2010, Fire-Rescue personnel
participated in rapid intervention training at Station 19. The
training was taught by Captain Scott Feather, Battalion Chief Marty
Stallings and personnel from Saint Andrews Fire Department. The
course consists of classroom instruction as well as intense hands on
evolutions. Personnel are taught how to free themselves from a
variety of hazards. Day 1 consists of firefighter rescue and the
practical evolutions involve firefighters entering an eight foot long box
lined with 200 feet of wires. Firefighters must make their way to
the opposite end of the box, use a tool to breach a sheetrock wall, and
then extricate themselves through a 14.5" by 20" hole.
Students also learned three different techniques for extricating
themselves through a breached wall. Days 2 and 3 involve rescuing a
downed firefighter and rapid intervention team operations along with a
final scenario that encompasses all the skills learned.
The training is a curriculum from the Fire Department Training Network.
